I am so spoiled by modern conveniences. Yes, they are intrusive at times, even addictive if you are not careful. I often hear people say they long for the olden days when there were no TVs, video games, Blackberrys, or computers, but I am not convinced. How easily we forget, that also means no refrigerators, central air or heat, flush toilets (no way I am going back to the outhouses!) What about running water – I need my hot shower, my coffee that is ready and waiting for me at the push of a button, and oh yes the microwave that speeds my dinner making progress. I love to be able to connect via the internet with friends and family that are scattered all over the world, order clothes, supplies and food even and have them delivered to my front door.
I am a little appalled at myself and how much I have come to rely on those modern helpers we often take for granted, but on a serious note, what about antibiotics/medical capabilities – one daughter had Rotavirus at age 2, then a serious Kidney infection a couple of years later, without IV fluids and basic antibiotics she would have died. My youngest son was not breathing when he was born – some complications involving the umbilical cord, fetal distress – he spent a couple of hours in neonatal intensive care and was fine. When you think about it who among you has not had a serious illness or family member that might have been lost 100 years ago. No, it might be nice to go back in time for a few days of a slower life, but I would not trade my life expectancy, my 4 children or my hot shower for anything!
