What are you Thankful for?

fall“Life without thankfulness is devoid of love and passion. Hope without thankfulness is lacking in fine perception. Faith without thankfulness lacks strength and fortitude. Every virtue divorced from thankfulness is maimed and limps along the spiritual road.” -John Henry Jowett

Why do we find it so hard to take the time to stop and be thankful all year long? Come on people! What is the sense of being here, of living day after day if we do not appreciate that we are alive and that our lives mean something. Many of us go through our lives reaching, hoping, waiting for something more, something better. Though we often can’t name it or picture it, we just know it’s out there….someday.

What if it is already here, perhaps this is as good as it gets? I don’t mean stop striving, stretching and working towards improving yourself and your circumstances, but look around you for just a minute. What is already present in your life? I often reflect back on my life 10, 20 even 30 years ago and think of how much time was wasted on wishing and complaining. My life has not been a bed of roses, but much of it was pretty darn good, yet I was always looking toward some future point in time when everything would be wonderful. So much joy passes by without notice because we cannot see it. Today, stop for a moment and take stock of where you are and who you are with. Maybe it’s like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz and you’ve had it all along.

Today I am thankful for car pooling, kind neighbors,  good friends and date night with my husband.

I think our children will always need us, whether they know it or not! It is a double-edged sword to raise them well, when that means if we do our jobs right they won’t need us as much. The pain-pleasure conundrum of parenthood.

  2. Tanya says:

I am thankful for my bright little girl whose independence is overwhelming. Our jobs as parents is to raise self sufficient children. It’s good to know that she can take care of herself but how much will I miss my little girl who needs me? Will she always need me in some way?

  3. Anthony says:

I am thankful for a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and pantry full of food (and way too much leftover candy).
