Home Sweet Home

Topics: Life Musings

Having just returned home from a weeklong vacation, I thought this an appropriate topic to share.

It sometimes seems as though everyone cannot wait until vacation, can’t wait to get away, travel, move even, but I am one of those rare creatures that really loves to be at home. Yes, I do like to get away occasionally, like everybody else, mostly because I must distance myself from work and household responsibilities to recharge. But I have a confession to make … I am in total union with Dorothy and her red shoes, “There’s no place like home!”

There is truly no other place that I would rather be…of course I want to visit Italy someday and Hawaii too, but only for brief stay to soak in the culture and expand my horizons. I am an incorrigible homebody, steeped in routine and honestly derive joy from my home and my surroundings. I love my home, my community and even my New York weather and I am incredibly lucky to be able to work from home as well. I expend time and effort to make my home a safe, comfortable place that brings me joy and comfort, why would I want to leave? Sure, we have a crack in the front porch, some stucco that needs to be repaired and rooms that are on the list for painting. It is and will always be a work in progress, but when I walk in the door; I breathe a sigh of relief and feel somehow protected from the challenges and strife of the outside world. This brings to mind a very common question I hear in conversation all the time, “When you retire where you will go?” The answer is usually Florida, South Carolina, California or some other warm destination, for me the answer is easy. I’ll go home!

*I must note here in all fairness that my husband lobbies doggedly for a warmer climate and a beach, but alas he loves me and so here we will stay.

Some day if you see a 90 year old woman(in 50 years or so), tending her flower garden, shoveling snow and  raking her leaves and you think to yourself, “why does she not move someplace warm?” The answer is simply, because there is no place like home
