Forgiveness Starts at Home

The supreme act of courage is that of forgiving ourselves.
That which I was not but could have been.
That which I would have done but did not do.
Can I find the fortitude to remember in truth, to understand,
to submit, to forgive and to be free to move on in time? Kaufmann

forgiveness

Forgiveness must start with one’s self. To forgive our self does not mean that we pardon or excuse everything we have done. It means that we take responsibility for it. We acknowledge it inside and to others if necessary. We accept that we were wrong and we move on.

Many times when we recognize that we are in the wrong, we slide into our self-absorption, becoming so wrapped up in self-flagellation and berating ourselves that we never quite attain a point of forgiveness. To forgive we have to release the recriminations and keep moving ahead. If we do not know how to do that with ourselves, we will never be able to forgive others.
