How do you respond when people ask you how you are doing or how things are going? If you are like most people, you say “fine,” “good” or “same old, same old” or some equally meaningless response that gives away nothing, is completely neutral or is sure not to make anyone uncomfortable. Do you ever say, “Just fabulous!” or “Life is wonderful?” Why not?
Somehow we feel as though we need to filter our responses so as to not stand out. Are we afraid of making other people uncomfortable if we are happy? Do we feel ashamed to be enjoying life? Why do we downplay joy and compliments and the like? It’s sort of a pack mentality. We feel compelled to stay with the pack and not differentiate ourselves by being “better” or “worse” than the rest of our group. It’ll seem like we are bragging or boasting if we don’t complain and gripe about something in our lives.

What if instead we decided to be honest and perhaps inspire others to do the same? Maybe we could raise the “joy threshold” for all of those around us by emanating contentment and delight. So the next time someone asks you how you are doing, say “terrific, marvelous,” or borrow the familiar t-shirt slogan and reply “Life is good!” See how they respond; you may be surprised.
