Who Needs Thanksgiving Anyway?

We do.

Because without it we too easily slip into the complacency of taking life’s treasures for granted and complaining about petty inconveniences.

I’m not a huge Thanksgiving connoisseur; vegetarian, don’t watch football, hate cleaning up the kitchen and so on, but what I do like is that it gives us a chance to slow down for just a minute and think about those things little things that together combine to make a life worth living, a business worth growing.

Quickly, off the top of your head list 10 things you are happy to have around you; that you would hate to do without.

My 10 things I’m grateful for right now:

Good health – Though I have my aches and pains like everyone else on the other side of 40, I am alive and fully functional.

Family – A husband who is not deployed this year, a mother and sibling who are close by, children I adore and a new grandson who I absolutely cherish.

Good friends – Steady, wise old ones and wonderfully witty new ones.

A house over my head and food on the table – In this economy…enough said.

Technology that allows me to play “Words” with my friends and family in different cities and see photos and videos of my grandson in the palm of my hand.

A good book…or 10 or 20,000. Words have power – humor, knowledge, comfort and inspiration.

Online shopping – For a busy mom, it is a lifesaver!

Music – Whether working, relaxing, dancing or even exercising, music soothes and energizes at the same time.

Laughter – Smile and brighten someone’s day; laugh and the world laughs with you.

A really good movie – Having recently been disappointed by some of the not-so-well-done productions churned out by the movie industry, I am ever so grateful for the wonderful ones that make me laugh or cry or get angry, especially a masterful work that can do all three.

What’s on your list?

Hands

Thankfulness is Power

HandsDuring tough times, many people find themselves battling thoughts of anger, depression, fear, etc.  These thoughts do nothing to inspire you, nor to move you in the right direction.  In fact, they make matters worse.  Thankfulness on the other hand, is a fast and powerful way to create a positive change in your circumstances.  Gratitude raises you up to a new level of consciousness and provides an atmosphere for awakening spirituality.  You are able to visualize new possibilities, receive ideas on what steps to take next and realize a positive vision for the future.

What we feed grows and what we think is purely a matter of personal choice.  We have to choose powerful thoughts that move us in a direction that serves our purpose.  Powerful, positive thoughts bring us peace of mind and inspire us.  They help us with smart goal setting as well as self improvement.  Get out of a funk by changing your thoughts and following up with clarity and precise action.

Say Thank You

deliveryIf the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice. ~Meister Eckhart

Who do you need to say thank you today? Is there a gesture or act that has gone un appreciated? Is there a thank you card that needs to be written – you can send an email if you have to, but I prefer a good old fashioned hand written note! Say thank you to at least 3 people today for their help or kindness.

Today, I am grateful for apple cider, yummy desserts and unexpected time with my children to share and enjoy.

The Highest Form of Thankfulness

Volunteer_foodLet us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. ~Theodore Roosevelt

The highest form of thankfulness comes from helping others, even in simple ways. Do a good deed today. You may not have time to serve in a food program, but you can spare a few minutes to help an elderly neighbor or a single parent. Perhaps you can give a caregiver a much needed break or stop at an extended care facility for a visit. We can all do something that benefits others.

My Birthday Wish

Today is my birthday. I was so filled with anticipation that I could hardly sleep last night! Really, who gets this excited at my age? Oh dear, that makes me sound really old, doesn’t it. I am not reticent in the least to announce that I’m 42 years old today. Or is that 42 years young? It depends upon how you look at it I suppose. What I know is that I was never this giddy over my birthday as a young child!
Perhaps it is that I now savor and appreciate each year of my life. Perhaps it is that I more fully understand how incredibly lucky I am to be alive and healthy. Perhaps it is that I have learned to grab on to each moment if joy as it comes. Or perhaps I have learned that life is an unpredictable journey of twists and turns; that interwoven amongst the challenges and heartache are moments of sheer bliss. That is a life to be grateful for!
My birthday wish for all of you is that you wake each day as thrilled to be alive as I am.

Generosity

When the economy is in a downturn it’s natural to think of yourself and your family first.  You probably have a mortgage to pay, bills to think about or a family to feed.  It is our instinct to try to get more and hoard what we have already to protect ourselves and to give us a sense of security.  It is certainly counter-intuitive to dedicate more of our time, attention and financial resources to those in the world around us when we are plagued by fear and insecurity.

However that is exactly what we need to do for many reasons.  Most importantly in this sort of financial climate, the poverty and need in the world are at their greatest.  Corporate giving is diminished, the government tightens its funding and the citizenry close their wallets. Hungry children, homeless families, the terminally ill and abused animals do not go simply go away! Also consider that the fastest way out of a recession is for people, governments and businesses to spend money, which serves to support our economy.

If you still have a job, a home, health-care and food then be grateful – you are lucky! Please continue to practice generosity and remember that there is always someone in greater need than you.
