Who Needs Thanksgiving Anyway?

We do.

Because without it we too easily slip into the complacency of taking life’s treasures for granted and complaining about petty inconveniences.

I’m not a huge Thanksgiving connoisseur; vegetarian, don’t watch football, hate cleaning up the kitchen and so on, but what I do like is that it gives us a chance to slow down for just a minute and think about those things little things that together combine to make a life worth living, a business worth growing.

Quickly, off the top of your head list 10 things you are happy to have around you; that you would hate to do without.

My 10 things I’m grateful for right now:

Good health – Though I have my aches and pains like everyone else on the other side of 40, I am alive and fully functional.

Family – A husband who is not deployed this year, a mother and sibling who are close by, children I adore and a new grandson who I absolutely cherish.

Good friends – Steady, wise old ones and wonderfully witty new ones.

A house over my head and food on the table – In this economy…enough said.

Technology that allows me to play “Words” with my friends and family in different cities and see photos and videos of my grandson in the palm of my hand.

A good book…or 10 or 20,000. Words have power – humor, knowledge, comfort and inspiration.

Online shopping – For a busy mom, it is a lifesaver!

Music – Whether working, relaxing, dancing or even exercising, music soothes and energizes at the same time.

Laughter – Smile and brighten someone’s day; laugh and the world laughs with you.

A really good movie – Having recently been disappointed by some of the not-so-well-done productions churned out by the movie industry, I am ever so grateful for the wonderful ones that make me laugh or cry or get angry, especially a masterful work that can do all three.

What’s on your list?

Say Thank You

deliveryIf the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice. ~Meister Eckhart

Who do you need to say thank you today? Is there a gesture or act that has gone un appreciated? Is there a thank you card that needs to be written – you can send an email if you have to, but I prefer a good old fashioned hand written note! Say thank you to at least 3 people today for their help or kindness.

Today, I am grateful for apple cider, yummy desserts and unexpected time with my children to share and enjoy.

The Highest Form of Thankfulness

Volunteer_foodLet us remember that, as much has been given us, much will be expected from us, and that true homage comes from the heart as well as from the lips, and shows itself in deeds. ~Theodore Roosevelt

The highest form of thankfulness comes from helping others, even in simple ways. Do a good deed today. You may not have time to serve in a food program, but you can spare a few minutes to help an elderly neighbor or a single parent. Perhaps you can give a caregiver a much needed break or stop at an extended care facility for a visit. We can all do something that benefits others.

Be Thankful

thank you

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,

If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something

For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.

During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations

Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge

Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes

They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary

Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.

A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are

also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.

Find a way to be thankful for your troubles

and they can become your blessings.

A day to say goodbye

Happy Memorial Day

Today, I am taking a break from regular productivity posts to reflect on something I feel is important – and that is actually a productive way to spend my day!

This is not just a holiday for us to picnic and party; remember the real reason behind Memorial Day. It has never been more personal to me than this year as we count down to our next deployment this summer. It is with a heavy heart, but one bursting with pride that I loan my husband – my personal veteran and soldier – to the service of his country. I have never been more grateful to all of those who currently serve and to especially those who we celebrate today who have made the ultimate sacrifice to secure our freedom, our safety and our future.

A day to say goodbye

A day to say goodbye

No matter your party, your politics, your religion or your beliefs take a minute today to reflect on the men and women who have fought for freedom and democracy for more than 200 years. Be involved, have an opinion, vote, exercise your freedom to voice support or dissent. You have that right and I would argue the duty to speak up as I am doing today. But whatever your views PLEASE show respect and gratitude for the individual soldier and his or her family. To them it is a matter of integrity, of doing what they believe is right and of being willing to leave their families behind to do so. It’s missed birthdays, holidays, milestones, soccer games, concerts, awards, school plays and everyday talks, hugs and bedtime kisses – months of family life lost that can never be retrieved.

My most heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to the 3 million active duty and ready reserve members for everything they do every day to protect me and YOU. And a fond farewell to those we remember today and their families – Thank you for your sacrifice.

A Little Thank You Goes a Long Way

thank youMake it a practice to send out hand-written thank you notes, phone calls or even emails on a regular basis. This makes a huge impact on maintaining your loyal clients, encouraging good feelings about your business and for acknowledging the people who have helped you in some way. From the first “thank you” for the interview to the “we appreciate the opportunity to work with you” those two simple words can be the most important you ever utter. The more grateful you are for what you have, the better an impression you will leave and I think the happier and more successful you will become.
